For
a number of years now, our church has supported The Hope and a Future
Trust (a Christian charity based in Shropshire) and the work that it does
in Guyana. To find out more about the work of The Hope and a Future Trust
(HFT) please click here.
This
year we had a fantastic opportunity to strengthen those links. In November
2009 a team of people (some from this church, along with other members of
the community) went to Guyana to see some of the work the HFT is already
doing, and also help establish new projects.
We
visited a number of different areas in Guyana in order to establish sports
diversion programmes in some of the poorest areas of this country. To find
out more about sport diversion schemes, and why they are so important,
please click here.
This
is a very ambitious project, mainly because we do not simply want to
provide coaching for the young people for a couple of weeks. A key aim of
this project is that it is sustainable, which is why some of our time in Guyana was spent
working with and encouraging those who will take on the responsibilities
for coaching the young people now that the team have returned to the UK.
We
had a fantastic time in Guyana, and the memories will stay with the team
for a long time to come. There is no way that any of us could convey all
that we did and experienced, but below are links to articles (and photos)
that give a taste of where we were and what we did.
